REGION ACTIVITIES

A Region consists of a number of Branches. Ours has three of them, Middlesex, North & East London and South London. Each of these has its own activities and its own pages on the main IWA web-site. But in addition the Region has some activities over and above those of the individual branches. The calendar for all Region, Branch and other waterway-related events in London can be found in our Region Diary.

CENTRAL LONDON SOCIALS

These take place on Thursday evenings, usually on the third Thursday of the month between September and June, usually at the Pirate Castle, Oval Road, Camden Town. See here for how to get there. Arrangements for December are different. See the Region Diary for details.

TOWPATH WALKS

We organise a programme of guided walks throughout the year on some of the towpaths of London's canals. For tax reasons these are actually run by an independent organisation which gives its profits to the IWA and which works in partnership with The Original London Walks, the oldest, biggest and best of London's guided walks organisations.

PLANNING AND NAVIGATION

Two of the rôles of any IWA Region or Branch are :-

  • Liaising with navigation authorities about the state of the various waterways in its area, and representing to them the views of users, both in formal User Group Meetings and otherwise, and
  • Keeping abreast of Planning Proposals for developments impinging on the waterways, and tabling objections or lending support as appropriate, up to the level of participation in Public Inquiries.

The nature of London is such that it makes most sense to handle these issues on a Regional basis, so we have a Planning and Navigation Committee responsible to the Region Committee. Its Chairman is Colin Edwards (CONTACTe-mail him).

The waterways for which London Region is responsible within IWA consist of the Thames Tideway from Teddington to Crayford Ness, along with its tidal creeks, the Grand Union Main Line from Brentford to Batchworth, The Paddington Branch, the Regent's Canal, the Hertford Union Canal, the Lee Navigation from Leamouth to the M25, the various waterways in Docklands and the former Grosvenor, Kensington, Grand Surrey and Croydon Canals.

NEWSLETTERS

Each Branch publishes it own newsletters several times a year. The regional newsletter now comes out annually.

THE 200 CLUB

The club was formed some years ago to help fund the running of the Region, so that other sources of income could be devoted more fully to campaigning and donations to waterways causes. Members of the Club must be IWA members aged 18 or over. The annual subscription to the club is £12, payable by annual cheque or standing order (either for £12 annually or £1 monthly). A member may hold more than one membership of the Club. Prizes are awarded by a draw which takes place six times a year. When the club has its full quota of 200 members, each draw awards four prizes of £100, £50, £25, £25. When the Club has less than 200 members, prizes are reduced so that the ratio of prizes to subscriptions remains the same. At the moment the Club is well below its target of 200 members and keen to recruit more.

All queries should be addressed to the Secretary, IWA London Region 200 Club, 12 Chipperfield Close, New Bradwell, Milton Keynes, MK13 0EP

RALLIES & EVENTS

IWA London Region doesn't currently run any regular rallies of its own, but is involved with a number of others in London run by its Branches, by other parts of the IWA and by outside bodies.

Canalway Cavalcade was originally run by the former London Branch, and handed over to London Region when the latter was formed. In 2001 it became a national event. It takes place at Little Venice, the junction of the Regent's Canal and the Paddington Branch over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend each year. In 2006 that's Saturday 29th April to Monday 1st May. The theme of Canalway Cavalcade 2006 will be Diamonds, celebrating the IWA's Diamond Jubilee. Cavalcade logoClick here for the Canalway Cavalcade web site.

Three Mills Rally

The Three Mills Boat Rally is organised by IWA North & East London Branch at varying dates each year to fit in with the rest of the Calendar. The Branch had a year off running this event for 2006. No announcement has been made for 2007.

Slough Canal Festival is organised by Slough Borough Council and IWA Middlesex Branch takes part. This very appealing event highlights the Slough Arm and the canal system as a whole. The 2007 Festival is on the weekend of 8 & 9 September.

Thames Tideway Cruises also feature in our programme from time to time. Campaign Cruises to Parliament were a feature of South London Branch's programme in 1996 and 1998.

South London Branch from time to time organises cruises on the tideway to enable boaters who've not done the tideway before do do it in company with those who have. No dates have yet been set for 2007.

Branch sales and display stands travel to a wide variety of events, waterways-related or not, during the year, and the Branches are always on the look-out for volunteers to help with this activity.
